Forum Reading and Seed Questions:
Forum reading: (1) a video titled “The surprising solution to workplace diversity”, (2) an article titled “Why diversity programs fail” Download “Why diversity programs fail”, and (3) an article titled “IBM: Diversity as Strategy”. Download “IBM: Diversity as Strategy”. All three learning materials are posted in “Module 2 Instruction”.
Seed Questions:
This forum requires you to watch a TedTalk video entitled “The surprising solution to workplace diversity” and read an HBR article titled “Why diversity programs fail”. Both learning materials discuss some problems in organizational practices of managing workforce diversity. What similarities or differences do you find between both learning materials? Support your comparison by making reference to specific contents in both the TedTalk video (“The surprising solution to workplace diversity” ) and the HBR article (“Why diversity programs fail”.)
This forum requires you to read an HBR article titled “Diversity as Strategy” which outlines IBM’s diversity management initiatives. Select one of these initiatives, and then answer the following two sub-questions:
(1) based on the HBR article entitled “Why diversity programs fail” to assess whether and why this IBM’s diversity management initiative is effective or not. Support your assessment by making reference to specific contents of both HBR articles (“Why diversity programs fail” and “Diversity as Strategy” );
(2) Based on at least one module concept discussed in the instructor’s lecture videos to assess whether and why this IBM’s diversity management initiative is effective or not. Explain what that module concept is and why/how it can be related to your discussion. Make reference to specific content discussed in the lecture videos.
Tips:
1. In the past, two common reasons why students lost points in the forum assignments were: (1) not making reference to specific contents in the required learning materials; and (2) not making reference to specific class concepts discussed in the module or not explaining why and how such class concepts can be related. So, avoid these mistakes!
2. A high-quality response should reflect your careful studying of required forum learning materials, evidenced by connecting to specific contents of these learning materials. Additionally, a high-quality response should also reflect your careful studying of class lecture materials (e.g., instructor’s lecture videos, textbook, and class readings other than forum readings), evidenced by connecting to specific class concepts discussed in these class lecture materials.
You need to post two responses: (1) the first one is your response to the original discussion questions posted for that discussion; (2) the second one is a follow-up to a response posted by another student (a “response to a response”).
Each of your two responses will be evaluated separately using the following guideline, with a total of 6 points (4 points for the response to original forum questions and 2 points for the follow-up response), equivalent to 4% of your final grade. So you should follow the guideline to ensure that each of your two responses includes the required elements.
Responses that are rushed (posted at the last minute), fail to make specific references to assigned forum learning materials, don’t connect to specific class concepts and lecture video content, or lack quality/relevance/specificity/depth will not be given full credits.
Here is a guideline for how each of your two discussion forum responses will be evaluated:
The “response to the original forum questions posted for that discussion” will be assessed using the following criteria:
Points allocation
Expectation
2 points – Relevance and preparation
Comments are thoughtful and relevant to the discussion, address ALL the forum questions, show excellent preparation of assigned forum learning materials, and make reference to specific contents in the assigned forum learning materials (e.g., video, forum reading, or website)
2 points – Integration with specific class concepts with justifications.
Your response makes explicit connections with specific class concepts and provides a clear explanation of “what is the class concept you will relate to”, “which part of the class learnings about this concept can be related to”, and “why such connections can be made”. To receive a full point, your responses must show strong proof of careful studying of the textbook and the professor’s class lecture videos for each module.
Total: 4 points
The “follow-up response to another student’s posting” will be assessed using the following criteria:
Points allocation
Expectation
1 point – Relevance and preparation
Response refers to specific argument(s) in another student’s posting. The response is at least 100 words and reflects a careful reading of another student’s posting.
1 point- Quality and depth
Comment has high quality; Comment extends another student’s posting by doing one or more of the following: (1) compare this student’s posting with your own or other individuals’ postings and explain how it can enrich/challenge your own or others’ posting or vice versa; (2) provide additional supporting evidence or critical insights to improve the quality of this student’s posting; (3) relate this posting to additional class concepts that are not addressed in this posting, and explain why such connections can be made.
Total: 2 points
The overall objective of our discussion forums is to create an engaging virtual classroom where you interact and share ideas with each other. Although I will be reading the responses posted and may occasionally chime in with thoughts, I expect that the forum will be largely run by and belong to all of you. The quality of these discussions is dependent on what you are willing to put into them. The better your comments, the more rich and interesting our class discussions will be.
