You’ll write two speeches that compare and contrast Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi with Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. One speech will be written to inform adults about the two texts; the other will be written to tell a group of fifth-grade students about the texts. You’ll have different goals for each speech.
This writing assignment will focus on the following skills:
Comparing and contrasting two works of literature
Describing the aesthetic impact of texts
Using different language for different audiences
Your essay must mention the purpose, point of view, and rhetoric of each work. You are welcome to discuss other elements of these authors’ styles as well.
