Read the following two articles available on the class website under Assignment 3 (Week 8):
Economist, January 12, 2013. Innovation Pessimism: Has the ideas machine broken down?
Harvard Business Review, June, 2015. The great
Both articles discuss aspects of innovation. The first raises concern that the pace of innovation is slowing. The second argues that we could be in for a rapid burst of innovation, but that not everyone and everywhere will benefit.
Three more (2-3 pages) companion pieces pick up the debate:
Greg Ip 2016. The Economy’s Hidden Problem: We’re Out of Big Ideas. Wall Street
Nicholas Bloom, Chad Jones, Jiohn Van Reenen and Michael Webb 2017. Great Ideas are Getting harder to Find. MIT Review.
Greg Satell, 2016. Innovation isn’t Slowing Down.
And don’t forget the materials from Week 1 of the class.
Within one essay of not more than 1400 words, discuss the following:
What is going on in terms of US innovation and productivity growth?
Discuss whether you think the evidence suggests innovation is in decline or whether we are in for a series of rapid bursts of new technology.
In conclusion, and building on your answer to question 2, outline the consequences of your vision of the changing nature of innovation for the future of economic growth. Will we see the same old growth inequalities going forward, or do we all have to be worried?
