Quality Element 1: Programming and Youth Development
The first step in thinking about the after-school program you want to develop is to look at the Assessment Tool from G-CAN.
This assignment requires you to do some thinking and possibly some of your own research for quality after-school programs.
Most programs, including yours, may not be able to reach all of the criteria in the Assessment, but it is something you want to strive for.
I have included some information on strengths-based learning in the module. Please read the articles because as with early childhood, we also want to start with what children know, not give them one-size-fits-all
Really think hard about what your vision is for your program. If you can develop a mission statement. What is going to be the purpose of your program in three or four sentences.
Answer the questions as well as you can, and think about what you would really, really, like to see in a good program!
