The primary purpose of the optional critical review paper (if you choose to complete it) is to develop your
ability to apply critical and creative thinking skills to questionable health information encountered in everyday
life. In this exercise, you will practice gathering academic health information and presenting an effective
written argument. The goal for you as the author will be to inform the reader about the accuracy (or
inaccuracy) of a questionable or suspicious health claim presented in a popular media item of your choice (an
advertisement, Facebook post, home shopping program, etc). This will involve selecting a particular target
media item/health claim for analysis; thinking critically and creatively about the item and the evidence used to
support its claims; and drafting a short critical review paper (5-7 pages, not including cover page or references
page) that presents your global assessment of the health claim(s) made therein.
