For this assignment, you will perform a brief analysis of one of the 4 assigned

For this assignment, you will perform a brief analysis of one of the 4 assigned texts that we have read in this unit so far. Choose one that you think makes particularly strong use of pathos. As a reminder, the assigned texts are:
Martin Luther King, Jr – “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
James Baldwin – “Letter to My Nephew”
Mary Wollstonecraft – from “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman”
Michael Kimmel – “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code”
Select one of these texts and briefly analyze the author’s use of pathos, adhering to the guidelines laid out below.
Guidelines
Your response to this assignment should have 4 elements:
A thesis statement indicating which author you think makes the most effective use of pathos and, briefly, why.
Refer back to our lesson on thesis statements from week 3 if you need a refresher on how to construct an effective thesis statement.
Your first example, in the form of a direct quotation from the text (properly cited), of the author’s use of pathos. Follow up the quotation with at least 3 sentences of analysis: what makes this use of pathos effective?
A second example, this time written as a paraphrase (properly cited), of the author’s use of pathos. Follow up the paraphrase with at least 3 sentences of analysis: what makes this use of pathos effective?
A 3 sentence conclusion in which you briefly explain why this author’s use of pathos is more effective than the author with which they are paired.
Baldwin and King are a pair
Wollstonecraft and Kimmel are a pair
If you think about it, you are essentially writing a miniature essay! It will serve as great practice for writing your rhetorical analysis essay at the end of this unit! However, unlike a formal essay, you should number your responses to each question so that I can clearly discern which piece of your writing is responding to which question.
